Exploring Disney Springs: A Complete Guide to Dining, Shopping, and Entertainment

Disney Springs is a must-visit destination at Walt Disney World, offering a vibrant mix of dining, shopping, and entertainment that doesn’t require a park reservation. Formerly known as Downtown Disney, this 120-acre district has evolved significantly since its opening in 1975. With its rich history, distinct areas, and endless activities, Disney Springs has something for everyone. Let’s dive into everything this iconic destination has to offer!

A Brief History of Disney Springs

Disney Springs first opened as the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village on March 22, 1975, intended as a shopping mall for Walt Disney World visitors. Over the years, its name and purpose transformed multiple times:

  • 1977-1989: Walt Disney World Village

  • 1989-1997: Disney Village Marketplace (with the addition of Pleasure Island, a nightclub complex)

  • 1997-2008: Downtown Disney, which became a hub for entertainment and dining

  • 2015-Present: Disney Springs, now divided into four distinct areas: Marketplace, Town Center, The Landing, and West Side

Each iteration brought more experiences for guests, expanding from simple shopping to a fully immersive entertainment district.

Four Distinct Areas of Disney Springs

The Marketplace is a family-friendly area filled with shopping and dining options that highlight American craftsmanship and Disney magic.

    • Rainforest Café and T-Rex Café offer immersive themed dining experiences.

    • Swirls on the Water serves Dole Whip with seasonal flavors and alcoholic options.

    • Earl of Sandwich is a popular spot for casual meals.

    • The Art of Disney for unique Disney artwork and collectibles.

    • Goofy’s Candy Company for caramel apples, candy, and treats.

2. Town Center

This is the heart of Disney Springs, home to upscale shopping, quick-service dining, and guest services.

  • Shopping:

    • Fashion lovers will enjoy stores like Anthropologie, Fabletics, Sephora, Vera Bradley, and Pandora.

  • Dining:

    • Blaze Pizza offers customizable pizzas, including vegan options.

    • The Disney Vacation Club Center has cast members ready to discuss membership opportunities.

3. The Landing

The Landing is a foodie’s paradise with unique dining experiences and iconic treats.

  • Gideon’s Bakehouse: Famous for its cookies, Gideon’s draws massive crowds. Monthly menus feature exclusive cookie flavors and cakes. Expect to join a virtual queue for these indulgent treats that could take HOURS.

  • Other Dining Highlights:

    • Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar, a lounge inspired by Indiana Jones, is a fun stop for themed cocktails and small bites.

    • The Basket at Wine Bar George (my personal favorite) offers a casual dining experience with shareable options like baguettes.

      • This is where Michal and I had our first date (see a picture of us from that day below!) which is why this location is so special to me. He ordered mac n cheese bites, we got fries to share, and I ordered a baguette thinking it was just going to be a slice of one but it ended up being a full baguette (see also below)! He carried it around Springs for me the rest of the night. We also stopped by Sprinkles Cupcakes (located in Town Center) for dessert. The highlight? Their cupcake ATM, which lets you grab a treat on the go. The night ended in typical Florida fashion with a downpour, but Michal being the gentleman he is, pulled the car around for me. We didn’t even call it a date until afterward, but it became the start of many Disney Springs memories.

4. West Side

The West Side is all about big entertainment and unique experiences.

  • Entertainment:

    • Aerophile – The World’s Largest Hand-Painted Balloon: For $30, guests can enjoy an eight-minute tethered hot air balloon ride, offering stunning views up to 10 miles on a clear day.

    • AMC Movie Theater for a classic cinema experience.

    • Splitsville Luxury Lanes offers bowling and dining.

    • Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn to Life: A breathtaking acrobatic show celebrating Disney animation, paired with a pre-fixed dining option.

  • Shopping:

    • Disney Style for trendy Disney-inspired apparel.

    • Star Wars Galactic Outpost for Star Wars-themed merchandise.
